Ernest is Ernest P. Worrel, fictional character portrayed by American actor Jim Varney in a series of television commercials and then later in a television series and a series of feature films. Ernest passed away in the year 2000. You might remember Varney’s short-lived television show “Hey Vern! It’s Ernest.”

You might better remember Jim Varney for having portrayed Jed Clampett in the 1993 movie “The Beverly Hillbillies” though you’re more likely to remember Erika Eleniak as Elly May Clampett.

To round out the cosmopolitan aires of Los Ranchos for readers however, pardon, there is a Blake’s at El Pueblo as well! https://tinyurl.com/mwnr3e2d
Also, since my last note of last year, I’ve stopped in to double-check re the quality of lamentedly-gone burgers of yore. Alas, using an It’s-a-burger as a frugal taste-test, I’ve found nothing new, least of all akin to the ’70s.
RE the “…one constant was the presence on the marquee of a jolly-faced ringmaster attired in top hat and red striped coat and bow tie. It’s been a familiar sight for all New Mexicans.” Lo, that was Ernest https://tinyurl.com/2vum9zyk who came to town to showcase the place, but I think you were still munching far out-of-town then!!!  Alas, I can’t remember who Vern was.

Blake’s Lotaburger is very well established in New Mexico. It’s cultivated generations of loyal followers. It’s unlikely those legions would ever let Lotaburger fail.

You hit on the key to a good Whataburger. Add your own green chile. The chile used by the restaurant is not very good.
